RESEARCH CHAPTER 05

We hear first, then learn where it came from

Sound can arrive before its object, outlast the body, and cross the cut while carrying invisible time on its own.

01

Central question

When sound precedes its object, outlasts a body, or crosses a cut, how does it carry time that the image has not yet made visible?

Questions still open

  • Do different releases, subtitle versions, or channel configurations alter the source delays and audiovisual breaks on which the chapter relies?
02

Argument and analysis

Sound can arrive before its object, outlast the body, and cross the cut while carrying invisible time on its own.

Memoria, Sound of Falling, April, Cemetery of Splendour, and The Zone of Interest release sound from its role as the image’s caption. A sound-crystal is not a mysterious effect: ask how its source is delayed, occluded, or reassigned, and how the listener’s body bears an unlocatable history.

Relation to identify while viewing

Make a sound-trace table before interpreting the image: when does sound lose its coordinates, and when does it rewrite the image?

03

Scope

Hypothesis: audiovisual disjunction has a terminological and shot-level basis; treating several contemporary films under one mechanism of sound carrying time still requires film-by-film, edition-specific verification.

Counterexamples and limits

If offscreen sound merely cues the next action, supplies spatial information, and quickly receives a stable source, it still serves causal continuity and cannot be called a sound-crystal merely because it begins unseen.
