RESEARCH CHAPTER 06
Archives preserve materials while later history changes their evidentiary meaning
An archive’s temporality comes from the institutional chain of filming, naming, classifying, storing, accessing, and reusing.
Central question
How do filming, naming, classification, custody, access, and reuse jointly change what an archive will be able to prove?
Questions still open
- Which institutions, editions, and later interpreters mediate the four films' materials, and which absences can be documented rather than imaginatively filled?
Argument and analysis
An archive’s temporality comes from the institutional chain of filming, naming, classifying, storing, accessing, and reusing.
With Hasan in Gaza brings three MiniDV tapes recorded in 2001 into a 2025 film. Alongside A Fidai Film, Meeting with Pol Pot, and Caught by the Tides, it places absence, dormancy, and re-editing inside the structure of evidence. The future-perfect archive concerns how preservation and later viewing change the evidentiary meaning of early images; hindsight belongs to the later viewer, not to a prophecy already contained in the footage.
Record source, gap, access condition, version, and later interpreter for every item; absence is itself an archival fact.
Scope
Hypothesis: the 'future-perfect archive' is an atlas proposition-like extension whose credibility depends on making provenance, editions, and gaps explicit.

ATLAS ANALYSIS
Time Reproduction
Recasts the archive from a storage container as a chain that produces temporality. This is an atlas extension, not a term claimed from Deleuze's primary text.

- Note
- Time reproduction and Contemporary Time-Image Practice (CTIP) are authorial syntheses, not Deleuze’s terms; P4 and Kakguan are cases awaiting evidence.

Counterexamples and limits
If a later film writes present knowledge back into earlier material as prophecy, or erases the chain of custody and re-editing, it produces omniscient narration rather than a future-perfect archive.

Sheets and peaks are two different chronosigns: recollection searches a virtually preserved past for a sheet, while peaks let incompossible presents each persist in its own right.
04How format, wear, and bodies make media carry historyWear, format, resolution, architecture, and the performer’s body let time settle inside the material of the medium.
10How unnamed, unreturned, and unaccounted-for deaths organize the presentThe dead continue to organize the living’s time; a corpse, funeral, or ghost does not automatically make a death-image.
12How images not grounded in a single capture reorganize the sources of timeGenerative models rewrite photography’s ‘that-has-been’ as a statistical past of training data, weights, and prompts.
