RESEARCH CHAPTER 02

How the crystal exchanges actual and virtual within one circuit

The crystal-image keeps actual and virtual distinct while making them exchange places in a minimal circuit.

01

Central question

What kind of present becomes visible when actual and virtual remain distinct yet exchange places?

Questions still open

  • In The Lady from Shanghai and Mirror, is the exchange circuit carried chiefly by composition, editing, performance, or the acoustic field of memory?
02

Argument and analysis

The crystal-image keeps actual and virtual distinct while making them exchange places in a minimal circuit.

A mirror is an entry point, not the definition. A hall of mirrors, rehearsal, memory, or the displacement of mother and wife becomes crystalline only when it changes the real relations of later shots. Actual/virtual is not real/false; the virtual already acts on the present.

Relation to identify while viewing

Find the actual face, the virtual face, and the mechanism of exchange; then ask which becomes limpid and which recedes into opacity.

03

Scope

Editorial synthesis: the smallest circuit comes from Deleuze; how the two films carry the exchange is an atlas shot argument and cannot be inferred from the mirror motif alone.

Counterexamples and limits

A mirror, flashback, double, or rehearsal that merely supplies exposition and does not alter the attribution of actual and virtual in subsequent shots is a motif or narrative device, not a crystal.
