Vampyr
Vampyr — Der Traum des Allan Grey
Pale grey light, drifting shadows, a scythe detached from its owner, and the road seen upward from inside a coffin strip inn, mill, and manor of stable coordinates. Allan Grey is not an agent who masters horror but Deleuze's grey figure of uncertainty. He moves between real connection and virtual supernatural possibility, while space itself bears the choice not yet decided.

Film analysis: how shots organize concepts
Pale light, disembodied shadows, and the coffin viewpoint strip space of objective coordinates, making Allan Grey not a monster-conquering hero but a figure through whom choice and uncertainty become visible in seeing.
- 01Shadows detach from bodies
Shadows move, dance, or precede bodies, while scythe and silhouette appear to act independently.
Visible forms no longer refer stably to real objects; place changes from objective space into a field of virtual relations. - 02Coffin viewpoint doubles death
The camera looks upward from inside a coffin as glass, treetops, and buildings pass, while Allan remains alive to witness his own burial.
Actual body and virtual corpse hold at once, and perception can no longer decide which layer has priority. - 03Grey uncertainty becomes choice
Allan moves from passively following signs to helping Gisèle and entering the mill action, yet remains within grey haze and discontinuous space.
Action does not eliminate uncertainty; intervention only changes Allan’s position in the relational field and does not by itself constitute the true choice that knows itself choosing.
Close-reading questions
- 01How do ownerless shadows, silhouettes moving against their bodies, and pale grey light prevent inn and manor from being stably judged as objective spaces?
- 02As glass, treetops, and buildings pass above the coffin viewpoint, Allan appears both living and as his own corpse. How does this viewpoint turn real connection into an undecided virtual relation?
- 03Why does Deleuze call Allan a grey figure of uncertainty? Comparing moments of watching, following, and intervening, which step constitutes a choice rather than a reaction?
