RESEARCH CHAPTER 11
The future has not happened, yet it already manages the present
Prediction, recommendation, and risk scores press the future into the present, but an algorithmic future is not Deleuze’s open virtual.
Central question
How do prediction, recommendation, and risk scoring govern the present in advance, and why do they differ from Deleuze's open virtual?
Questions still open
- Which interfaces, classifications, or behavioural feedback in The Beast and After Yang show a probabilistic future shaping subjects rather than technology merely being discussed in the plot?
Argument and analysis
Prediction, recommendation, and risk scores press the future into the present, but an algorithmic future is not Deleuze’s open virtual.
Platforms extend probabilities from historical data and form predictive subjects; Deleuze’s virtual preserves difference and the possibility of genuine emergence. Compare them at the level of model, interface, and viewer behaviour rather than jumping from ‘AI’ to ‘virtual’.
Record the recommended next item, the risk prompt’s deadline, and the turn the character genuinely cannot foresee side by side.
Scope
Hypothesis: model probability space may be compared with the virtual but not equated with it. Evidence at the intermediate levels of model, interface, and viewing behaviour remains incomplete.

ATLAS ANALYSIS
The next step: real-time production of temporality
Poses the move from direct presentation of time to real-time production of tense. The distinction between algorithmic futures and the virtual remains an atlas hypothesis.

- Note
- Operational time-image, temporal apparatus, and platform temporality are research names; model probability space is not Deleuze’s virtual.

Counterexamples and limits
Prediction does not inherently close the future. If model, interface, and institution preserve uncertainty, appeal, and multiple courses of action, warning may support care. The chapter must show that a specific apparatus actually narrows actionable branches.
Further reading
The contemporary crisis is not too little action but too much action that cannot accumulate into workers’ own future.
12How images not grounded in a single capture reorganize the sources of timeGenerative models rewrite photography’s ‘that-has-been’ as a statistical past of training data, weights, and prompts.
13When heterogeneous times rewrite one another rather than merely coexist on screenThe final chapter turns the time-image into a testable relation: at least two heterogeneous times rewrite one another, shot, sound, editing, or apparatus carries the change, and a replayable consequence remains.
